Right to the City Schools

  January Leadership Session

Right to the City Schools Leadership Program

(The Right to the City is the radical idea that the inhabitants of a city have the right to shape the institutions that affect their lives.)

In almost every school district in the United States, parents and the public have the power to shape education policy. Participants in this program will lead a research project that gives voice to teachers, parents and students and their experiences under mayoral control of schools. Teachers will survey and interview hundreds of school stakeholders from a diverse array of New York communities, analyze data and publish findings in a groundbreaking report that launches a campaign for a new vision of school governance.

Teachers Unite is a member of the Right to the City Alliance-NYC. Participants in this project will learn more about this exciting coalition and how teachers can support our grassroots organizational alliance members.

How can teachers, students and parents help shape policy in NYC  public schools?

We will learn about the opportunities for community input under law and the impact of mayoral control of our schools on our voices for justice in education. Participants in this session will be prepared in their roles as researchers!
