education and start leading some real campaign work?

Get Involved in Teachers Unite's Social Justice Campaigns

1). Rank and File Leadership Program

(Definition of Rank-and-File: Individual members of an organization, exclusive of its leadership)

Teachers Unite members are proud members of the United Federation of Teachers Local 2 AFT. We are building strengthening the movement for workers rights and social justice by developing the organizing skills and community collaboration experience of rank and file union members. Visit our Leadership Program page for more information on past and upcoming leadership and organizing development opportunities.

2). Right to the City Schools Campaign

(The Right to the City is the radical idea that the inhabitants of a city have the right to shape the institutions that affect their lives.)

In almost every school district in the United States, parents and the public have the power to shape education policy. Participants in this program will lead a research project that gives voice to teachers, parents and students and their experiences under mayoral control of schools. Teachers will survey and interview hundreds of school stakeholders from a diverse array of New York communities, analyze data and publish findings in a groundbreaking report that launches a campaign for a new vision of school governance.

Teachers Unite is a member of the Right to the City Alliance-NYC. In addition to collaborating with fellow coalition members on issues of the human right to housing, police brutality, and stop and frisk, Teachers Unite members are building a grassroots campaign that demands real power for teachers, students and parents in our school system.

We are currently finishing a research project on the current role of educators, parents and students in how curricula and safety decisions are made at schools. We hope to release our findings in Spring 2012.
