- Facilitated the establishment of a conflict management project at Lyons Community School designed by the NYU Mediation Clinic
- Helped organize a presentation to a dozen school principals, sponsored by the Department of Education's youth-development office, by International Institute of Restorative Practices with the goal of implementing restorative justice practices and positive behavior supports in our schools.
- Published Teachers Talk: School Culture, Safety and Human Rights, in collaboration with NESRI (National Economic and Social Rights Initiative) that documents teachers’ perspectives on what is needed to create safe, positive school climates that ensure the human right to education for all children
- Developed alliances with grassroots organizations citywide. Projects included the following:
- TU members lead two semesters of English classes for the members of VAMOS Unidos (organizing Latino/a immigrants, primarily street vendors, for economic and racial justice, immigrant rights, and police accountability).
- We introduced FIERCE to over a dozen energetic educators working with Gay Straight Alliances in schools around the city, helping to build FIERCE’s membership and inform at least one hundred more LGBTQ youth of color about FIERCE’s campaign work and leadership development opportunities.
- Teachers Unite members helped shape Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective’s political education workshops for pregnant and parenting teens.
- Joined Right to the City (RTTC)! We are a national alliance of membership-based organizations and allies organizing to build a united response to gentrification and displacement in our cities. Our goal is to build a national urban movement for housing, education, health, racial justice and democracy. Teachers Unite’s members have been asked to develop a Public Education policy plank of the RTTC-NYC platform for the upcoming municipal elections. This year the alliance will launch a campaign to convert vacant luxury condominiums throughout the city into affordable housing for low-income New Yorkers.
